Benin Republic receives hundreds of displaced Ogun state indigenes

Hundreds of residents in Yewa North, a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic have fled off to the latter country, in a bid to escape the destruction unleashed on their villages by marauding herdsmen.

Women, children and a handful of older men were seen arriving Pobe with scanty luggages they were able to salvage. Government Officials in Benín Republic have received the refugees but where they will be sheltered is yet to be ascertained.

As at the time of filing this report, the Ogun state or Nigerian government has not make mention of the brewing crisis in this part of the country. The paramount ruler of Yewaland who also doubles as the Olu of Ilaro Ọbá kehinde olugbenle is yet to make any official announcement as to what is happening in his kingdom.

Yewa has an area of 2,087 km2. Among the twenty Local Governments in Ogun state, it has the largest expanse of land with a size of 200,213.5 hectares and it has a population of 600,000.

We hope the Nigeria government would step up in securing the lives and properties of citizens and also restore order to Yewa so that these refugees can come back to their lands.

The aftermath of the villagers/herder crisis in Ogun state has left a bitter pill in the mouths of indigenes as hundreds of Yewa residents have been displaced to Pobe in Benin Republic as they seek refuge.
