Concerned Edo Citizens Forum (CECF) has petitioned the Federal Government to keep the ongoing National Sports Festival from being halted abruptly (NSF).
The party, led by Mr Roy Oribhabor, made the announcement in a press conference in Benin on Thursday.
The Edo government threatened to close the 20th NSF by noon on Thursday due to the federal government’s failure to release support funds pledged to the state.
If the government breaks its pledge to Edo, according to Oribhabor, many young people’s hopes and dreams will be shattered.
“We hereby call on Nigeria Government to immediately fulfill the promise made to Edo State Government in regards to the supportive funds.
“A promise is a hope, Nigeria Government must act now.As concerned citizens, we are seriously embarrassed and disappointed to note that Nigeria Government has not shown serious capacity to fulfill her promise made to Edo State Government.
“This is national embarrassment. It’s frustrating, disappointing and great embarrassment to all Nigerians,” Oribhabor stated.
The group however commended Edo Government over its uncommon display and commitment to host the 20th NSF.
Mr. Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sport Development, has yet to return calls or messages left on his line.
However, John Akanji, the minister’s aide, directed NAN to Peter Nelson, the Secretary of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), for comment.
However, the festival’s MOC has yet to respond to the Edo government’s threat to shut down the NSF by noon on April 8.
