Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation HADIN KAI, in collaboration with the Civilian Hunters and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of providing critical reconnaissance data to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
The suspect, identified as Abdullahi Umar, a native of Gwoza, was apprehended on March 23, 2026. The operation followed the receipt of credible intelligence regarding the presence of insurgent elements operating within the Tactical Area of Responsibility of the 232 Battalion in Gombi, Adamawa State.
According to security reports detailed by analyst Makama Zagazola, preliminary investigations indicate that Umar was specifically tasked by insurgent leaders to monitor military movements and infrastructure. His primary objective was to identify vulnerable entry points and logistical routes leading to the 232 Battalion’s general area to facilitate future coordinated attacks.
During initial interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to his involvement in a recent kinetic engagement against Nigerian troops in the Ngoshe axis. His role as an informant highlights the ongoing challenge of “insider threats” and community-based intelligence networks utilized by terror groups to bypass conventional military defenses.
The arrest is viewed as a significant tactical success for the multi-agency security framework in the North-East. By neutralizing local informants, the military aims to blind the operational leadership of ISWAP and Boko Haram, disrupting their ability to plan ambushes and long-range incursions against government installations.
Umar remains in military custody, where he is undergoing further interrogation to extract information regarding other members of the surveillance cell and the locations of transient insurgent camps. Security forces have intensified patrols in the Gombi and Gwoza axes to preempt any retaliatory actions following the compromise of their informant network.
Military authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals within their communities. The integration of local hunters and vigilantes has proven pivotal in identifying suspects like Umar, who often blend into the local population to conduct covert surveillance.
