The Lagos State Government has issued a travel advisory regarding a temporary traffic diversion at the Stadium and Ojuelegba Flyovers to facilitate the installation of truck barriers.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the diversion is a proactive measure to prevent frequent accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles on these bridges. The installation is scheduled to take place over two weekends during the late-night and early-morning hours to minimize the impact on daily commuters.

Diversion Schedule

The bridges will be closed to both inward and outward traffic from 12:00 midnight to 5:00 a.m. on the following dates:

  • Phase 1: Saturday, March 28 – Sunday, March 29, 2026.
  • Phase 2: Saturday, April 4 – Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Alternative Routes for Motorists

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic during the five-hour work windows, the Ministry of Transportation has outlined the following detour options:

  • From Eko Bridge/Costain/Iponri (Inbound Ojuelegba/Alhaji Masha Road):
    • Motorists will be diverted to the service lane from Alaka.
    • Follow the route past the National Stadium gate to link the Barracks area or continue toward Alhaji Masha Road.
  • From Eko Bridge (via Costain) and Apapa Road (via Iponri):
    • Motorists are advised to use Iponri Estate Road.
    • Connect to Bode Thomas via Adeniran Ogunsanya and proceed through Shitta Roundabout to reach their final destinations.

Safety and Compliance

The Commissioner emphasized that the overnight schedule was specifically chosen to balance infrastructure safety with public convenience. Motorists are urged to:

  1. Follow Directional Signs: Adhere strictly to the instructions provided by traffic management personnel on the ground.
  2. Exercise Patience: Allow for slightly longer travel times if moving through the Surulere/Ojuelegba axis during the affected hours.
  3. Avoid Vandalism: The state government warned that those found tampering with or damaging the newly installed barriers will face legal prosecution.

This project is part of a broader “Lagos Safety” initiative following a series of tragic incidents at the Ojuelegba flyover involving falling containers. The new barriers are designed to physically restrict unauthorized heavy-duty trucks from accessing the narrow flyover sections.
