The Ogun State Police Command has taken a 38-year-old man, Joseph Kehinde, and his 13-year-old son into custody following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm during a targeted security operation. The suspects were apprehended on Sunday, April 5, 2026, along the Sagamu–Ogijo Road axis, a corridor currently under increased surveillance by state tactical units.
The arrests were carried out at approximately 11:00 am by operatives of the Command’s Quick Response Squad (QRS) stationed near the Lafarge area. According to an official statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babasiyi, the teenage suspect was initially intercepted while travelling as a passenger in a commercial tricycle during a routine stop-and-search exercise.
Upon conducting a physical search of the minor, police operatives recovered a locally made pistol, one live cartridge, and a face mask. When questioned at the scene, the teenager was reportedly unable to provide a coherent explanation for the items, but subsequently alleged that the weapon and ammunition belonged to his father.
“Following the disclosure, operatives intensified efforts, which led to the arrest of the father,” DSP Babasiyi stated. The elder Kehinde was picked up shortly after in a follow-up operation directed by the QRS team.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Detectives are currently working to determine the origin of the firearm and whether the suspects are linked to recent reports of cult-related activities or roadside robberies in the Sagamu industrial periphery.
The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the vigilance of the officers involved in the interception. He reiterated that the Command maintains a high-alert status across the state’s major highways to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
“We maintain zero tolerance for unlawful possession of firearms and other criminal activities. Residents are encouraged to provide timely and credible information to support security efforts,” Commissioner Ojajuni stated in the release.
Legal experts note that the involvement of a minor in the transport of illegal arms adds a complex layer to the investigation, potentially involving charges related to child endangerment alongside firearm statutes. The police have confirmed that both suspects will be formally arraigned in court once the ongoing investigation at the SCID is concluded.
