The Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Zuru (also known as Muhammad Usman Ankwai) has passed away. The high-ranking legislator reportedly died on Monday evening, April 6, 2026, at a medical facility in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
The news of his transition was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Murtala Diri, an official of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, and further corroborated by Idris Zuru, an aide to the State Governor on Communication and Strategy. The late Speaker, popularly known by the traditional title “Lifiddan Zuru,” was a prominent political figure within the Zuru Emirate and a key pillar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Elected as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly during its inauguration on June 8, 2023, Zuru represented the Zuru Constituency with a focus on legislative reforms and rural development. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the recent passage of the ₦642.9 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill, which was formally signed into law by Governor Nasir Idris just weeks prior to his medical trip abroad.
The news of his death has triggered a wave of mourning across the state. Colleagues and political associates have described him as a disciplined and dedicated public servant whose leadership fostered a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative arms of the state government.
“The death of the Speaker is a significant loss to his constituents, the legislative body, and the state in general,” the official statement from the Assembly noted.
Governor Nasir Idris is expected to lead a high-powered state delegation to receive the remains of the late Speaker upon their repatriation from Egypt. While the state government has yet to announce a period of official mourning, flags are expected to fly at half-mast at the Assembly complex in Birnin Kebbi.
Funeral (Janaza) arrangements will be announced by the Kebbi State Government and the deceased’s family following the arrival of his body in Nigeria. He is survived by his family and a legacy of service to the people of Zuru and Kebbi State.
