Armed bandits launched a violent early morning raid on Gazau village in the Isa Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State on Monday, abducting six residents. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of the day, has heightened tensions in a region already grappling with a surge in kidnappings and threats from criminal syndicates operating along the Sokoto–Zamfara border.

According to local sources, the gunmen invaded the community at approximately 1:00 am, storming several households and initially seizing 13 people, including 12 women and one man. Witnesses reported that the assailants moved the captives toward the Dan Adama Forest, where they implemented a selective release strategy based on household ties.

The attackers reportedly instructed the abductees to identify their family relations, subsequently releasing one person for every two individuals from the same household. “In the end, the assailants took six persons to their hideout, while seven others were freed,” a source familiar with the incident confirmed. The six individuals still in captivity have been identified as Asabe Zakariya, Inno Ibrahim, Inno Musa, Umma Yusuf, Safina Abdullahi, and Saminu Jijji.

Beyond the abductions, the bandits reportedly issued a chilling ultimatum to the community. Residents were warned that the village would face daily attacks unless they formally sought “amnesty” from the bandit leadership. This demand for a local truce is a tactic increasingly used by armed groups in the North-West to extort communities and establish parallel governance in remote areas.

The security situation in Isa LGA has remained volatile throughout early 2026. In March, the Chairman of the LGA, Sharehu Abubakar Kamarawa, was forced to debunk reports of mass displacements in nearby Tidibale village, clarifying that residents were temporarily moved to the council headquarters as a precautionary measure following similar threats. Despite the establishment of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the area, the mobility of the bandit groups continues to challenge localized security efforts.

Efforts to reach Chairman Kamarawa for an official statement on the Gazau raid were unsuccessful, as his phone lines remained unreachable. Similarly, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, did not respond to inquiries regarding the abduction or the ongoing rescue operations.

The incident underscores the persistent vulnerability of rural Sokoto communities to cross-border banditry. While the state government under Governor Ahmed Aliyu has vowed to intensify the fight against criminal elements through the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps, the residents of Gazau now face the grim reality of negotiating for the lives of their kin while living under the shadow of a threatened daily siege.
