Flamengo strengthened their position at the top of Group A in the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores with a 4–1 victory over Independiente Medellín at the Maracanã Stadium on Thursday.

The Brazilian side delivered a composed performance, particularly in the second half, to secure their second consecutive win of the group stage. The result ensures Flamengo maintain a perfect record and take early control of the group standings.

The match began with both teams showing attacking intent, as Independiente Medellín attempted to challenge Flamengo’s dominance with a disciplined first-half display. The Colombian side managed to create moments of pressure, but Flamengo’s structured play and individual quality gradually began to dictate the tempo.

Flamengo took advantage of key opportunities as the game progressed, with Giorgian de Arrascaeta playing a central role in their attacking moves. The midfielder provided an assist for Bruno Henrique, helping to open up Medellín’s defense before later adding his own goal with a well-timed run into the penalty area.

Despite Medellín’s efforts to respond, Flamengo maintained control through possession and quick transitions. The visitors showed resilience but struggled to contain Flamengo’s attacking depth, particularly in the latter stages of the match.

Pedro added the fourth goal late in the game, effectively sealing the victory and confirming Flamengo’s dominance on the night. The forward’s contribution capped off a comprehensive performance by the home side.

Flamengo also came close to extending their lead further during the second half. A goal scored by defender Léo Pereira was ruled out following a VAR review, with officials determining that the play was offside by a narrow margin. The decision limited the final scoreline but did not affect the overall outcome of the match.

With the result, Flamengo now sit at the top of Group A with six points from two matches, maintaining a 100 percent record in the competition so far. Estudiantes occupy second place in the group, while Independiente Medellín remain third with one point after two rounds of fixtures.

The Libertadores campaign is a key objective for Flamengo this season, as the club aims to add another continental title to its history. Their strong start reflects both squad depth and tactical consistency under current management.

Beyond continental competition, Flamengo are also balancing domestic commitments. The team is scheduled to return to action in the Brazilian league on April 19, where they will face Bahia at the Maracanã in the 12th round of the Brasileirão.

Attention will then shift back to the Libertadores, with Flamengo set to face Estudiantes on April 29 in what is expected to be a decisive encounter in the race for the top spot in Group A.

Independiente Medellín, meanwhile, will look to regroup ahead of their upcoming fixtures as they aim to remain competitive in the group. The Colombian side faces increasing pressure to secure points in order to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Flamengo’s performance highlights their status as one of the stronger contenders in this year’s tournament. Their ability to combine attacking efficiency with defensive organization has been evident in the opening rounds.

As the group stage progresses, consistency will remain crucial for teams aiming to advance to the knockout rounds. Flamengo’s early momentum places them in a favorable position, though challenges are expected as the competition intensifies.

The victory at the Maracanã reinforces Flamengo’s ambitions in the 2026 Libertadores, with upcoming matches likely to further define their path in the tournament.
