Detectives from the Ajuwon Division of the Ogun State Police Command have apprehended three family members in connection with the brutal murder of 38-year-old Stanley Okirie in the Akute area of Ifo Local Government Area. The suspects include two minors and an adult relative, all of whom resided with the deceased.
The suspects have been identified as:
- Maureen Okirie (35), sister of the deceased.
- Salia Karikari (15), cousin to the deceased.
- Jubril Karikari (12), cousin of the deceased.
The Incident and Attempted Cover-Up
According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded during a heated family dispute on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The suspects allegedly attacked Stanley, striking him on the head with a wooden pestle. The blow resulted in a severe, fatal head injury.
The crime was brought to light following an anonymous tip-off regarding suspicious activities at the residence. When detectives arrived at the scene around 11:15 a.m., they reportedly caught Maureen Okirie in the process of attempting to bury Stanley’s blood-drenched corpse in a shallow grave within the premises. Police officials described this as a clear attempt to conceal the murder and evade justice.
Police Statement and Investigation
Confirming the arrests on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the murder weapon—the wooden pestle—has been recovered.
“Preliminary examination of the body revealed a severe injury to the victim’s head,” Babaseyi noted. He further disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for more rigorous interrogation and subsequent prosecution.
The deceased’s body has been deposited at the Life Channel Mortuary in Olambe for a post-mortem examination.
Reaction from the Command
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, has strongly condemned the killing, describing it as “cruel, inhumane, and deeply disturbing,” particularly given the close familial ties between the victim and the alleged perpetrators.
The Commissioner assured the public of a transparent investigation, emphasizing that the command remains committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in the violent act and the attempted cover-up face the full weight of the law.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the Akute community, where residents expressed disbelief that a domestic disagreement could escalate into a coordinated fatal attack involving children and siblings.
