The Federal Government has officially directed the commencement of a one-stop joint-interest screening system across the nation’s airports. The move is designed to streamline security protocols, eliminate bureaucratic duplication, and fortify the aviation environment against intruders.
Mr. Ahmadu Danjuma, the Acting Regional Manager (North Central) for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed the directive in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, March 29, 2026. According to Danjuma, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) issued the mandate to ensure a more coordinated response to emerging threats, including the presence of unauthorized herders and hoodlums near airport perimeters.
Key Features of the One-Stop System
A one-stop screening system centralizes the efforts of multiple agencies into a single, cohesive checkpoint. Key benefits include:
- Integrated Checks: Combining Immigration, Customs, and Aviation Security (AVSEC) into one process for passengers and cargo.
- Efficiency: Reducing the time spent at multiple individual security desks while increasing the rigors of the search.
- Resource Optimization: Allowing for better intelligence sharing between different security arms in real-time.
Enhanced Perimeter and Personnel Security
To complement the new screening protocol, FAAN has introduced several high-tech and tactical upgrades:
- Surveillance Technology: Deployment of modern X-ray machines and L3 scanning systems across major hubs, including Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
- Armed AVSEC: The government has officially approved for Aviation Security personnel to bear arms, providing a more robust first line of defense within the terminal and along fences.
- Intruder Prevention: Increased constant patrols along perimeter fences to deter stray herds and unauthorized persons from encroaching on sensitive runway areas.
Mandatory “STP123” Training
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has now made the Basic STP123 AVSEC course a mandatory requirement for all security personnel before deployment. This specialized program equips officers with competencies in:
- Explosives screening and advanced searching techniques.
- Recognition of restricted articles and electronic threat detection.
- Emergency response coordination during airport crises.
- Controlled movement of people and vehicular traffic within restricted zones.
Danjuma noted that despite the high volume of travel during recent festivals, no significant security breaches have been recorded this year. He expressed confidence that these reforms—ranging from technology integration to capacity building—will sustain international safety standards and reassure both domestic and international travellers.
