The Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has suffered another violent incursion after unknown gunmen launched a coordinated attack on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of a prominent local security figure and significant property destruction.
According to security sources and local residents, the attackers targeted the heart of the community, killing a well-known vigilante leader identified as Baba Ibeji. His younger brother, popularly known as Ajere, sustained severe injuries during the assault and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The gunmen demonstrated a high level of audacity by attacking the divisional office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Oro-Ago. Witnesses reported that the facility was significantly damaged during the raid. Additionally, a Point of Sale (P.O.S.) business located directly opposite the NSCDC office was broken into and looted, further heightening the sense of insecurity in the commercial center of the town.
This latest incident marks a sharp escalation in a series of violent attacks that have plagued the Ifelodun axis over the past week:
- Sunday, March 22: Armed bandits invaded the ECWA Church in Omugo, abducting eight worshippers. While three victims later escaped, six others—including the wife of a local pastor—were initially reported to remain in captivity.
- Tuesday, March 24: A convoy transporting the remains of deceased hunters from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan for burial was ambushed. Two local hunters serving as an escort were killed in the exchange of fire.
- Monday, March 23: An improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly rocked the nearby town of Woro, causing multiple casualties and infrastructure damage.
Security analysts suggest these coordinated strikes—targeting religious centers, security outposts, and transit convoys—align with a growing “insurgent signature” in the region. The Kwara South Joint Security Watch had previously issued an alert warning of imminent threats to Ifelodun, Irepodun, and Isin LGAs, urging authorities to reinforce forest patrols.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Kwara State Police Command regarding the Wednesday evening raid were unsuccessful at the time of this report. However, local vigilante groups and forest guards have reportedly intensified their presence around the Oro-Ago and Oke-Oyan corridors to prevent further infiltrations.
The persistent violence has caused significant panic, with some residents calling for a more permanent military presence in the area to secure the ungoverned forest spaces that are being exploited by the criminal elements.
